Offshore Fishing
It is the dancing of the sailfish on the surface with lightning speed, too the powerful big mean marlin that attracts fishermen far and wide to these awesome Costa Rican waters COSTA RICAN sailfish are the largest I have ever encountered sense my first one in Cabo San Lucas in 1975.They average here 100lb's and I have to believe that some we have released were 140lb's or more.
They are present here 12 month's out of the year with Dec. threw july being the top month's.In these months it is not uncommon to raise 10-20 to the boat in a given day with an exceptional day seeing as many as 30-40+. My best day fishing here with World record holder Captain Bobby McGuinness we raised 90+ to the boat and landed 27 all on fly that particular day.Marlin are a breed of there own, usually you only get one quick shot at them. You must move fast and make no mistakes,Once he senses something is wrong he is gone never to be seen again. So important while chasing these bill fish is a very good experienced captain and mate,One that can maneuver his boat in his sleep. I have fished with many in my life and found none to be as good as Bobby McGuinness. Once you have experienced it a few times it is not hard to tell how many times your captain has been at the helm. Again this is one of the reason's to only book with us as we know and work with only the best.
We have both blue and black marlin here in Costa Rica along with the odd stripped marlin. A Blue marlin is a full attack mode at all times.I have seen them many times come in and light up like some neon lights.Once hooked up they will attack the boat on full charge,I have on video one in particular that charged the boat 3 times,he would surface 50-100' away and then full speed head for the boat,as we would roar out of his way he would fly past the transom. On the other hand, a black marlin fights you with his power and weight. He will pull on you till you don't think you can do it any more an for sure not another one the same day. We catch them here in COSTA RICA as large as 1000lbs.I have seen captain Bobby McGuinness raise as many as 9 to the boat in a single day and our clients successfully land 4 of them, they were everywhere. If a big blue or black is what you are after then COSTA RICA is your place.
Costa Rica waters are also filled with Dorado 12 month's out of the year,it is a rare day on the water here not to see a 3-4 Dorado chasing around in your lures. The month's of November,December,January, February, are the best as the rainy season has just ended and all of the river's have washed out log's and debree down and out to sea. As you find them floating on the surface off-shore there will be concentration's of bait fish of all size's along with Dorado and quite often a bill fish of some nature. I have seen as simple as a sheet of plywood, barrel,or tree stump hold several dorado under it. The best was a bunch of stumps and log's all tangled up in a off-shore fish netting together must of been 30-40' in diameter. We managed to pull 17 Dorado out from under it until a big Blue marlin came flying by and ran everything off. What an awesome sight the Dorado all flying threw the air as the 500+pound Marlin was trying to eat them.
MARLIN:
A blue marlin is most common of your marlins here as they cruise the COSTA RICAN waters year round, and most readily found in October, November , December although the last few years we have encountered several of then year round. The black marlin are most abundant in June,July, august although like there cousin the blue
we have been seeing more and more year around.
SAILFISH:
Sail's are here year around with the peak time January threw July and it is not uncommon to raise to the boat 10-20 in a given day and a good day 30+. The rest of the year very common to raise 3-8 per day.
DORADO:
DOLPHIN and MAHI-MAHI are all the same fish andhere year round with November,December,January, being the best although we will see our biggest one's in June/July.
TUNA:
Yellowfin tuna is the main species and for sure are the big boys in COSTA RICA. These 100-300 pound fish will test your back your leg's your everything. You find the porpoises and you have generally found the tuna. The big tuna swim with them and feed on the same bait fish.
also as the smaller tuna school up for the bait does the Marlin ans sails so hang on.
WAHOO:
Wahoo are rare in these waters but we do catch a few 2-4 per year and can be 50-100pounds.
IN-SHORE FISHING:
Inn-shore fishing in COSTA RICA is consistent year
round. Roosterfish, cubera snappers are the main attraction's but the waters along the beaches and river mouth's add to the menu. A dozen other species such as dog tooth snapper, grouper, amber jack's,bluefin trevally, sharks and barracuda and many more all cruise these water's.
ROOSTERFISH:
The most targeted in shore fish is available in good numbers year around here in COSTA RICAN water's. They will average 20-50 lbs and can run as large as 100lb's or more. I have never found a place better then here in the southern end of COSTA RICA the gulf of Dulce Bay is just loaded with sardines and blue runners the best bait ever for roosters. We have had many clients out after a
big one and every time come home with big smiles.
SNAPPERS:
We have here in COSTA RICA a dozen or more different species of snapper from 3 pounders all the way up to 50+ pounders. The Cubera snapper is the most common along with the dog snapper, mullet snapper, spotted rose snapper, and many more. (most all very good to eat.)
