A Personal Note from Dan Ross on Big Game Fly Fishing

"A few of my buddies wanted some fly action with some aggressive Rooster fish - you call it we deliver!" Dan RossCosta Rica fishing is an unbelievable and even a humbling experience for fly fisherman of all calibers. Hunting billfish offshore with a fly rod is by far one of the most exciting experiences any fisherman could wish for. Imagine a 100 pound sailfish or even a 300-400 pound blue marlin in all-out attack mode, chasing your fly off the back of the boat… after you hook one of these big game beasts you will find out, or be reminded why these beasts are the ultimate sportfishing trophy.

Fishing offshore, for billfish, we frequently catch Dorado (mahi mahi) and tuna as well. We have landed numerous Dorado over 50 pounds on fly rods, and it’s not uncommon to catch as many as 12 of these fighters in one spot without putting the boat back in gear!

Tuna is another favorite of mine and a great fish to catch with fly rod. It’s always exciting to run into a school of hungry tuna up to 20 pounds ready to aggressively chase your fly. Even the pickiest tuna will take a swipe at one my specially designed tube flies. We have landed over 20 tuna in a matter of minutes on fly rods.

Tarpon are spectacular in their jumping and fighting ability and there is no place better in the world than the Rio Colorado River – one of my favorite hot spots. Here you will find awesome sight fishing and fly fishing opportunities. The prize fish are huge, high flying, aggressive strikers and abundant.

I have spent the last fifteen years fly-fishing Costa Rica, and have personally fished with a number of Captain’s up and down the coast. This experience has taught me that when it comes to fly fishing, not all Captains are created equal. We only use Captains with demonstrated knowledge and success of fly fishing for billfish.

Whether you want to chase billfish or tarpon, please come down and let’s go fishing in Costa Rica, there is nothing I would enjoy more than helping you catch the fish of a lifetime!

“My secret to catching fish…fish where the fish are.”
